Synopsis from Goodreads:
We are not guaranteed anything, not even this life.

Rivers Young is the popular guy untouchable by reality. He is like a star—bright, consuming, otherworldly. The thing about stars, though, is that they eventually fall, and he is no different.

He falls far and he falls hard.

Delilah Bana is the outcast enshrouded in all of life's ironies. Alone, in the dark, like dusk as it falls on the world. When Rivers hits the ground, she is the night that catches him. In the darkness, they meld into something beautiful that shines like the sun.

Only, the greater the star is, the shorter its lifespan.

My Thoughts

When one of my friends suggested that I read Unlit Star, I was eager to check it out. It seemed to be something of a cross between Kim Holden’s Bright Side and Jojo Moyes’ Me Before You, two books that are just bursting with feels! I’d been feeling in the mood for a story that could make me cry, and it came at just the right time.

The plot revolves around the relationship between Delilah, the girl who’s perfectly content with being an outcast, and Rivers, the popular boy who closes himself off after an accident he’s convinced marks the end of any life worth living. But when these two, who are seemingly worlds apart, come together, they form an unlikely bond and realize that they are not so different after all.

Delilah is the kind of person who doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her, and I find that admirable. She loves to save things, and taking it upon herself to help Rivers despite having her own problems just shows how strong and giving she is as a person. While Rivers starts off as a bit of a snob, I somehow still felt for him, and I’m glad that Delilah never gave up on him. It’s great that how he finds light and happiness again amid his hopelessness. I love their moms for being so supportive of them through everything; it’s nice how everyone just seems to get along really well.

I like the flow of the plot as well, but Delilah’s problem (or at least the fact that she has one) is pretty obvious from the first few chapters, so the ultimate revelation does not really come with surprise. In spite of this, the things that happen after still pack an emotional punch. The writing is beautiful; there are feels, feels everywhere!

Overall, Lindy Zart’s Unlit Star delivers a touching, heartbreaking story that will make you smile and cry in a roller coaster ride of emotions; it’s definitely worth reading!
